Mitsubishi says it will showcase the new Lancer sport sedan at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with a spring 2007 launch set for North America.
The Japanese automaker on Friday released a sketch of the car, which it noted shares its design language with the 2005 Concept-X and the Concept-Sportback show cars.
Design cues of the '08 Lancer include a trademark "shark nose," deep-set "eyes," a wide track, a low stance and long hood/short deck proportions. The new Lancer comes off Mitsubishi's first global platform, known as Project Global, and shares underpinnings with the redesigned Outlander.
The company said the Lancer will include entry-level models all the way up to an all-new Lancer Evolution supercar.
In a statement, Mitsubishi said Project Global will "support the launch of several new Mitsubishi vehicles over the next few years, designed from the outset for world markets." It also said models from business partners DaimlerChrysler — with which it was co-developed — and PSA Peugeot Citroën will also be based on this global platform.
