It's a case of the public wanting what the public gets with most major car manufacturers. But someone at Fiat has got their market-savvy hat on.
The all-new 500 is nearing production and, while the basic design has been signed off, there's still time to finalise those important details.
So, in its infinite wisdom, Fiat is giving us the chance to spec up our own cars, with the intention of using the input as market research.
Perhaps for the first time in this office's bipolar history, the mental cogs all turned in perfect unison: imagine what would happen if 1.5 million Top Gear readers went out of their way to queer Fiat's democratic pitch.
Go to www.fiat500.com and do your worst. There's an almost infinite combination of classic, sporting and psychadelic accoutrements with which to bugger up this perfectly attractive car.
Fiat is also planning a funky looking cabriolet and Abarth versions of its own, too, so don't be shy.
The first cars will hit our streets at the start of 2008 and prices will start at around £8,000. Before options, that is.
