LA Motor Show 2010: the eco brigade

If California were a country, it'd be in the G8. And as well as voting in the 'Governator' to protect them against future death by robot, they also voted against rolling back state legislation to reduce carbon emissions.

Fitting, then, that this hemp-smoking hippie haven should showcase what is being described as "the future of motoring" at its motor show. (Others are calling them "ridiculous flights of plastic fantasy that won't ever get made").

Still, we've already had the snarling V8 Camaro and a hardcore Porsche from LA. And if you fancy more meat pie after all these raw vegetables, click here for a NEW LAMBORGHINI.

Mercedes Biome concept
Bit of a fantasy this. OK, a complete fantasy, but hey, its environmentally friendly so it ticks our box.
Conceived as part of the LA Motor Show design competition, the Merc Biome has a fully fictional backstory - it's grown in a nursery, the wheels and interior options are developed from seeds planted in the three-pointed star, it's compostable, releases pure oxygen and weighs under 1,000lbs. Exists in a universe we haven't discovered yet, much like its designer. Enjoyably ridiculous, but will never get made. NEXT.

Volvo Air Motion concept
Another participant in the design competition, a 1/4 scale model of the Air Motion will showcase at the LA show. It's made from carbon fibre and runs on compressed air motors which cool down under load, removing the need for cooling systems.  Laughably ridiculous, and will never get made. NEXT.

Honda Jazz EV
OK, this one is actually coming quite soon. The city car is powered by a lithium-ion battery and coaxial electric motor to achieve an estimated 100-mile driving range, while three adjustable driving modes allow drivers to maximise efficiency or acceleration. In 'Sport', the Jazz EV can apparently generate the performance of a 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Honda Jazz EV
It also gets mobile connectivity, syncing important stuff to your computer or phone, such as the car's battery levels, charging and roadside assistance. Will actually get made, and probably do quite well among the Pruis brigade. NEXT

Tesla-Toyota Rav4 EV concept
You guessed it - those enterprising chaps at Tesla teamed up with Toyota to produce a Rav4 electric SUV. 35 will be built for demonstration purposes, that will then get nailed to oblivion via testing, ready for a production model sometime in 2012

Tesla-Toyota Rav4 EV concept
It weighs just 100kg more than the US-spec V6 Rav4, but will accelerate just as quickly and provide a range of around 100 miles. The concept on display houses a Tesla powertrain, so if you suddenly need a new laptop battery around the downtown LA area, well, good luck. Will probably get made, but we won’t want one. NEXT.

Kia Optima hybrid
Designed primarily for 'Mericans who think 20mpg is efficient, the Optima hybrid runs a 40bhp electric motor which runs it to 62mph, after which a 166bhp 2.4-litre petrol engine takes over. Combined mpg stands at 45, a herculean feat managed quite succinctly by a ten-year-old BMW 320d. So utterly pointless. NEXT.

Jaguar C-X75
Yes, this one again. The jet-engined Jag made its American debut and as expected, US folk were just as blown away as we were when it hit the Paris show floor last month.

Jaguar C-X75
Not that you need reminding, but it packs four electric motors and two micro gas turbines for a combined power output of 780bhp, and a 0-62mph time of 2.3 seconds. With NO emissions. Stick that up your Prius, Hollywood. MAKE IT NOW
