Our spies capture Merc’s new SL convertible on test at the Nurburgring.
Merc’s new SL is shaping up! Mercedes’ all-new two-seater drop top doesn’t debut until the Geneva Motor Show in 2012. But the firm’s engineers have already hit the Nurburgring in Germany to rattle off laps before the winter weather sets in.
Despite the heavy disguise on this test car, which hides a look which owes much to the SLS supercar, you can see the small camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror. This is part of Mercedes’ latest suite of driver assistance systems, which includes Lane Keep Assist and night vision. All will be offered on the new SL.
The newcomer will also get the Aircap system, which is designed to reduce buffeting when the top is down, that debuted on the E-Class Cabrio. The retractable top will also feature Magic Sky Control electro chromatic glass, which varies the amount of light let in thorough the panoramic sunroof electronically.
The SLS supercar and the next SLK, which debuts at the Geneva show next year, have heavily influenced the design of the SL’s all-new aluminium underpinnings.
Under the bonnet, the SL will get Mercedes’ latest stop-start-equipped large capacity petrol engines, as sales continue to be strongest in the US and Middle East, where petrol is cheaper. Expect the range to kick off with the new 3.5-litre V6, which will also feature hybrid power later in the model’s life, and twin-turbo 4.7-litre V8.
AMG models will get the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo engine which features 537bhp in standard form or 563bhp with the AMG Performance Package.
The new SL is due to go on sale in the UK in summer 2012, with Mercedes targeting annual sales figures here of well into four figures annually.
