TVR on comeback trail

IS this the car that could finally herald the resurrection of TVR? Our amazing image shows how a new roadster, with a Corvette V8 engine, could look.

Although plans to build the model in eastern Germany have fallen at the final hurdle, the company has vowed to fight on – and could produce it on its own in the UK. TVR bosses had been in talks with FMS, the owner of Gullwing – which produces a modern-day Mercedes 300SL – but were unable to agree terms.

The two parties had been working towards a joint venture, which would have seen the emergence of a powerful new roadster. This car was designed by TVR man David Martin, who based himself at the Gullwing factory in Germany to build a prototype.

Gullwing chief Jurgen Mohr – a former TVR owner – would have been well placed to build the car, which took shape as a wider-bodied open-top designed to use the Corvette V8. In the end, Mohr and TVR boss Nikolai Smolenski couldn’t agree a deal, but the firm remains positive that a new car is possible, and is continuing its efforts to put it into production.

“It would be desirable to build it in the UK, and we’re keeping our options open,” said TVR secretary James Oxley.
