TLC Works on Electric Version of Replica FJ40

VAN NUYS, Calif. — The electric-vehicle bandwagon is getting increasingly crowded. Now, TLC, maker of the Toyota FJ40-inspired Icon, says its next alternative-drivetrain project is a "full-electric Icon with an optional biodiesel generator."

The California company says the electric prototype is currently under development with partners at 3rd Millennium Energy and Dynatrac. Pricing is not yet available on the future electric Icon.

The company is known for its handcrafted remake of the original FJ40, which starts at $88,000 and is powered by a 350-horsepower 5.7-liter V8.

At the same time, General Motors keeps up the drumbeat on its electric Chevrolet Volt, with a YouTube video posted on its Fastlane blog about the Volt's reveal in Detroit earlier this month.
