Third generation of Mercedes’ folding metal hardtop SLK roadster breaks cover.
After countless spy shots and teasers, the lid has finally been lifted on the all-new, third generation Mercedes SLK.
The new car features Mercedes’ latest design language ushered in by the latest E-Class and SLS AMG supercar, including the upright nose that features the firm’s three-pointed star logo. The familiar long bonnet and short, stubby tail profile remain.
Extra flair has been added thanks to the vents in the front wings that are supposed to be reminiscent of Mercedes’ roadsters of the 1950s, while the design is brought bang up to date with LED head- and taillights. The bonnet and wings are now made of aluminium to save weight.
Four air vents, inspired by those in the SLS, dominate the interior. Mercedes promises a hike in quality for all the interior materials, and the clever Airscarf, which blows hot air around your neck from vents in the seats, is complimented by Mercedes’ Airguide draft stops, which can be swung into place by the driver quickly to stop wind buffeting at speed.
Once again, the roadster features in intricate folding metal hardtop, but this time, Mercedes has introduced the option of an electric Magic Sky Control sunroof that goes opaque at the touch of a button.
Initially, power will come from a choice of three powerplants. There are 181bhp and 201bhp versions of a 1.8-litre, four cylinder unit, and a range-topping 302bhp 3.5-litre V6. All cars feature direct injection and stop start, helping to improve the efficiency of the range by a claimed 25 per cent.
The SLK 200 entry-level model comes with a manual box as standard, and can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds and hit 150mph. Fuel economy is pegged at 46.3mpg.
The SLK 250 comes with Mercedes’ slick 7G-Tronic auto as standard, and returns 45.5mpg, while still being able to take down the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in 6.6 seconds and hit 150mph.
The SLK 350 manages 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds, hits 155mph and manages 39.7mpg.
Later in the car’s life the SLK will get its first diesel engine, the 201bhp 2.4-litre CDI, and an AMG model with a twin-turbo version of the new petrol V6.
As well as three engines, there are three suspension options – normal, sports and Dynamic Handling, which features adaptive suspension, variable ratio steering and torque vectoring rear brakes.
Safety kit includes Mercedes’ Pre-safe brake and attention assist, while buyers will also be able to opt for an intelligent light system, which gives five headlight modes which change depending on driving conditions, and speed limit assist, which uses a camera to read road signs and display the speed limit on the dash.
The SLK will arrive in the UK in June, and prices and specs will be confirmed closer to that date.
