Coming soon: The electric Rolls-Royce for the affluent

rolls royce
It was being speculated earlier that the luxury automaker Rolls Royce could have an electric version of its Phantom luxury car hit the roads by the end of 2010. We haven’t seen one yet, but the rumors of an electric Rolls-Royce are back in the news. Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, CEO of Rolls Royce, has lately cited that all options for alternatively fueled vehicles were being considered. He further said…

We are not going to make any rash decisions. It would be wrong for the brand and wrong for our customers if we were to take a decision without fully exploring all options.
The company’s flagship Phantom currently does a mere 15 miles to the gallon. It simply means that affluent who sit behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce aren’t much concerned about the fuel efficiency. Still, it’s good to hear of a green Rolls Royce, and we might see one just in time for the 2012 Olympics where parent company BMW will showcase its pioneering electric and environmentally-friendly technology to the world.
Rolls-Royce has announced record annual car sales in 2010. Rolls-Royce sold 2,711 cars in 2010, and when compared with the 1,002 sold the year before, it’s an increase of 171 percent. One of the major reasons behind the record sales was the £165,000 Ghost launched in April. The Ghost is quite popular with young and wealthy customers.
