2008 Subaru Impreza (WRX) to go after VW GTI
UK's Auto Express is reporting the next WRX has set its sight on the VW GTI, as the target vehicle of choice. They're reporting 3-and 5-door hatches, and no sedans. Now keep in mind this is a UK car magazine, and in the UK and Europe, hatches are the hot ticket. Whether we see those configurations here, I have no idea.
Well, actually I do have an idea, as I've heard from someone who has seen pictures of the US-spec '08 Impreza, and he said a sedan is still on the table. He also said it would have the same 105.1" wheelbase as the current Legacy, but will be no longer than the current Impreza. That means less front and rear overhangs. It also means more interior room—a much desired feature. While I have not heard anything regarding suspensions, my guess it will also use the multilink rear suspension from the Legacy.
This vehicle is reported to debut at the next Tokyo car show in the fall of 2007.

Wild new Mustang unleashed
We reckon so, and it's got some serious endorsement from an American racing legend.
The Parnelli Jones Mustang is a limited edition model from US tuning, racing and supercar company Saleen.
Looking every inch the menacing muscle car, the Parnelli Jones Mustang comes in a unique Grabber Orange colour with black striping.
There's also a power hump in the bonnet, rear spoiler and slatted rear window cover on matt black to give that essential 1970s feel.
Running on 19in alloy wheels with broad tyres front and rear, the Parnelli Jones looks the business.
Inside, there's some special seat trimming and a Saleen/Parnelli Jones steering wheel boss.
But this ain't no cosmetic makeover. Under the bonnet, Saleen has brought its knowledge to bear to pump up the 302ci (5.0-litre) V8's grunt up to 370bhp and 370lb ft.
A new exhaust finishes off the engine tweakery and has a seriously addictive V8 rumble.
Only 500 Saleen/Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustangs will be built and prices in the States are expected to start around $55,000 (£33,000), with delivery this September.
Parnelli Jones may sound like a delicatessen in Swansea to some Brit ears, but he is one of the US's most successful racers and steered a Mustang to victory in the 1970 Trans Am championship, the equivalent of winning the British Touring Car Championship nowadays.

2006 Aston Martin DB9 Sports Pack
The new five-spoke forged aluminium alloy wheels are lighter than the standard wheels, the springs and front anti-roll bar are modified and the ride height lowered.
Taking the DB9’s VH architecture as its foundation and retuning some of its key components, the DB9 Sports Pack offers an even more focussed driving experience, with improvements to both high-speed body control and steering response. That means a DB9 Coupe specifically for the enthusiastic driver with a high level of driving skill, who likes to drive quickly, safely and with precision.
The first key to the sharper dynamic balance is a significant reduction in ‘unsprung’ mass which indirectly allows the suspension to react more quickly to inputs such as bumps and cornering forces - resulting in improved grip, steering response, body control and ride quality.
With the DB9 Sports Pack, each five-spoke light alloy wheel gives an unsprung weight saving of more than 1kg, with a small but significant additional saving from the use of titanium wheel nuts. In total, that equates to more than five per cent reduction in unsprung weight on each corner of the car. The new, lighter 19-inch wheels are the same size as the standard wheel and use the same Bridgestone tyre.
The DB9 Sports Pack’s spring rates are increased by 68 per cent at the front of the car and 64 per cent at the rear. The front anti-roll bar is modified, and the dampers are revised to support the new spring and anti-roll bar characteristics. Together, the changes optimise body control and front-end grip without compromising ride quality or adding weight. The ride height is reduced by 6mm, lowering the car’s centre of gravity and further reducing body roll while leaving ample ground clearance and backed up by modified bump stops.
The composite undertray is also replaced, by a load-bearing aluminium panel that performs the same function in managing underbody airflow while adding further structural stiffness, to resist larger lateral loads fed into the front of the car by the uprated front springs and anti-roll bar.
The cumulative effect is significantly improved dynamic response, and especially steering feel - making the DB9 feel lighter, more positive on turn-in, more agile and more involving for the enthusiastic driver. Body control is especially enhanced during high speed manoeuvres, giving the DB9 a more neutral handling feel.
Aston Martin Sales & Marketing Director, Bill Donnelly, says: “This optional Sports Pack will offer driving enthusiasts the opportunity to tailor their DB9 Coupe to deliver an even more rewarding dynamic experience. The Sports Pack offers another addition to the Aston Martin range and provides customers with an even greater choice and the ability to further personalise their DB9.”

Spy photo: Honda CR-V
A sharp-eyed photographer in Australia managed to snag one of the best shots yet of the upcoming compact SUV as it drove along side its RDX cousin. It looks slightly larger than the current model, but most speculation points to the continuation of four-cylinder power only. With rivals like the 269 horsepower Toyota RAV4, Honda could be taking a chance of getting left behind. Then again, with gas prices the way they are maybe Honda has the better plan.

Lexus fine-tunes its IS220d
The big change is a tweak to the rear axle ratio to give more urgent response in any gear. The result is 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds, which is curiously the same as the standard model's.
There's the expected sports suspension and 18in alloy wheels, while the interior gains metal-effect trim, sports pedals and suede-effect upholstery.
The Lexus IS220d is on sale now for £26,925.

2006 Ferrari 599 GTB
Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari's Vice General Manager will announce today at the Detroit Motor Show the birth of the latest model developed in Maranello.
The new car is a concentration of Ferrari's most innovative and technologically advanced engineering solutions applied to a mid-front engined two-seater coupŠ¹. The result is a new benchmark for performance, driver involvement and design.
The Ferrari 599 GTB boasts class-leading power thanks to its 5,999cc V12 - derived directly from the Enzo Ferrari supercar - which produces no less than 620hp at 7,600 rpm for a weight/power ratio of just 2.6 kg per horsepower.
Ferrari has adopted the latest evolution in its tried and tested all-aluminium construction technology for the body and chassis.
The unmistakable Pininfarina design gives the Ferrari 559 GTB aggressive yet elegant lines which are perfectly integrated with the advanced aerodynamic solutions adopted to reach the performance figures attainable.
This new model is the symbol of Ferrari's production - the V12 berlinetta - and represents the latest interpretation of a theme that has seen such classics as the 250 GT, the 275 GTB, and the 365 GTB4.
The Ferrari 599 GTB replaces the last in that great line of berlinettas, the 575M Maranello, of which - together with the 550 Maranello introduced in 1996 - no fewer than 5,700 have been produced, a record for this type of model for the Prancing Horse.
The new car will be officially unveiled on the 28th of February 2006 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Jag XJ's fuel feat
Not usually noted for its frugal habits, the Jag saloon has just been driven for 1,000 miles on a single tank of fuel.
The original idea was for a five-strong team of drivers from Jaguar to drive from John O'Groats to Lands End on a single fill.
When the team completed the 840-mile journey, they realised there was still a bit of fuel left, so they carried on to top 1,000 miles.
A total of 1000.2 miles was shown on the odometer before the tank ran dry, with an overall economy of 53.5mpg.

• Coupe unique in its design and interior.
• Debut: straight-six turbocharged power unit developing 225 kW/306 bhp.
• Intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system featured for the first time in a coupe.
• Lightweight steel body: stronger and lighter.
• Bi-xenon headlights embellished by corona rings for daytime use.

Individual style now comes in a new expression: the BMW 3 Series Coupe. Offering a brand-new look of all-round elegance, BMW’s two-door coupĆ© sets a new benchmark in terms of elegant looks, value, and comfort.
And at the same time it significantly raises the standard of driving dynamics, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe introducing a truly exceptional power unit now making its debut in the world market: the first straight-six complete with a twin turbocharger, high-precision fuel injection, and an all-aluminium crankcase.
Through its supreme potential alone, this 225 kW/306 hp power unit in the BMW 335i Coupe ensures a significant increase in torque and acceleration, while keeping fuel economy on the same low level as before.
The other variants of the new BMW 3 Series Coupe entering the market in September 2006 – the BMW 330i Coupe (200 kW/272 hp), the BMW 325i Coupe (160 kW/218 hp), and the BMW 330d Coupe (170 kW/231 hp) – again reflect the principle of BMW Efficient Dynamics in every respect. Further versions of the new two-door model with six- and four-cylinder power units will round off the model range at a later point in time.
As an alternative to its six-speed manual gearbox, the BMW 3 Series Coupe will also be available with BMW’s new six-speed automatic transmission. Keeping gearshift times extremely short, the new automatic transmission ensures an even more spontaneous response to the gas pedal, thus enhancing not only driving comfort, but also driving dynamics.

Toyota FJ Cruiser rant-'n-rave
" I have felt for some time that the current craze for crossovers, while certainly good, has put the traditional off-road-oriented SUV on the back burner in terms of importance. Many say there is no need for a real SUV, as they never go off road anyway. Well, tell that to people living in Nevada, the Rockies, and in other outback areas of this very large and still mostly unpaved country. So I was happy to see the new-and improved Xterra, Hummer and this all-new FJ—and that they seem to be selling well. That's the good news...
The bad news, as far as the FJ is: There's just too much "dumb styling," and not enough "smart design." I pity and FJ driver when he/she has to look over their shoulder to see if there are any vehicles coming up on their right. The absolutely gargantuan C-pillar on this vehicle, and porthole-sized rear quarter window, coupled with the huge rear spare tire must have set an all-time low record for poor rearward visibility. Not only is it bad, it's borderline dangerous. That's problem numero uno.
A second problem is this vehicle requires premium gas! You know it's going to get lousy mileage, so why rub salt into the wound by requiring premium? Besides that, premium gas may be harder to find if you happen to be using this vehicle as it was intended—like out in the boonies... Speaking of boonies: Why is the full-time 4x4 transfer case only available with a manual transmission? The Land Cruiser, Sequoia and 4Runner offer full-time 4WD or selectable full-time 4WD automatics, so why not also the FJ?
Then there's the front shoulder harnesses that are anchored to the rear suicide doors. That means those doors can't be opened with the shoulder belts in use—which leads me to wonder about the sanity of these suicide door setups, and how they compare to traditional 4-door setups. Well folks, I've tried getting in and out of the FJ's rear several times; give me a real 4-door vehicle (like the Xterra) any day of the week!
I see way too many styling (and marketing!) concessions here in a vehicle that's supposed to be all about function. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I'm sure it makes sense to Toyota, as these things will fly off the showroom floor like hotcakes. All I can say Mr./Ms. SUV buyer: check it out carefully first, as you will have to live with your purchase for some time. "

Jeep at the NY auto show
"However, I got lucky: As I was walking by, with my Edmunds buddy AJ (aka juice), this Jeep guy came up to us and asked for a volunteer. Without a blink I stepped forward, and was quickly ushered into the front passenger seat of the Grand Cherokee you see pictured above. The Jeep folks wanted to demonstrate how well the GC handled this kind of terrain; you know, the kind of stuff you might encounter on a trip to the mall. Hey, it got me a free T-shirt...
I got a chance to see the new Compass (hate it), the new Patriot (love it), and the new Wrangler Unlimited (kinda like it). The Compass, in my opinion, is the wrong path for Jeep to follow. It will do nothing but water-down the Jeep off-road and brand image. The Patriot, on the other hand, will (also) address the cute-ute market, and will likely not hurt the Jeep off-road or brand image.
It's the first truly modern Jeep with a fully independent suspension. I'm hoping—that if it succeeds in the market—that future "real Jeeps" will build upon the engineering ideas presented on this vehicle. "

VW TSi engines launched
As with so many abbreviations, the latest comes from Volkswagen and is TSi.
And just like VW's FSi moniker, there's no direct explanation of what TSi stands for, but if we tell you it could well be 'turbo supercharger injection', you should begin to get the drift.
VW has launched a new range of engines that use a supercharger to boost power at low revs, while a turbocharger comes into play at higher revs.
The 1.4-litre TSi engine comes in two versions, with either 138bhp or 168bhp.
Buyers can order this new engine in the Golf now, which only comes in sporty GT trim, which starts at £15,995.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a 116-inch wheelbase, achieved by adding 20.6 inches to the standard all-new 2007 Wrangler's 95.4-inch wheelbase. The additional length allows for a larger rear seat that features three seating positions, as well as more hip, leg and shoulder room. In addition, Wrangler Unlimited offers nearly triple the rear cargo space.
Offered in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited utilizes the same five-link solid-axle suspension configuration as the standard 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Providing easy entry and exit, all four doors on the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited are front-hinged, with inside and outside handles, and windows that travel all the way down. Rear doors feature exposed forged hinges, open a full 90 degrees, and provide a 26.5-inch wide opening.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers rear-seat passengers a 33-inch front-to-rear couple distance and 37.2 inches of legroom. Rear seats split 60/40, and easily fold flat, creating 83 cu. ft. of total storage volume.
With rear seats in the upright position, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features 46.4 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the rear seat, providing more cargo space than the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2006 Hummer H3 and 2006 Nissan Xterra. A new lockable underfloor storage area secures personal items out of sight.
Identical to the standard all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features an all-new instrument panel, center stack and high-back front bucket seats. The front-seat area provides 54.6 cu. ft. of space, providing 5.1 inches more shoulder room and 4.6 inches more hip room compared to 2006 Jeep Wrangler models.
Even More Open-air Fun for Even More Passengers
An all-new, three-piece modular hardtop — Jeep's Freedom Top TM — features three removable panels for a variety of open-air driving configurations. The left- and right-front passenger panels may be stored inside the vehicle, while the rear section can remain in place or be removed separately.
"Whether removing one of the Freedom Top panels or flipping back the Sunrider soft top, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited provides owners the flexibility to conveniently experience open-air driving in less than 30 seconds," said Donoughe.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited also features a standard Sunrider TM soft top, which includes a "sun roof" feature as well as the full top-down option. This soft top provides a second open-air option by folding the soft top back completely over the first- and second-row occupants, creating a 55x60-inch sun roof opening — an opening 30 inches longer than the standard 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sunrider top.
Even More Legendary Off-road Capability
Even with the additional 20.6-inch wheelbase length, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited achieves off-road leadership among all SUVs in its class. Superior ground clearance combined with short front and rear overhangs enable Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to navigate the most rigorous off-road trails.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a best-in-class approach angle of 44.4 degrees, breakover angle of 20.8 degrees, and best-in-class 40.5 degree departure angle — all more than worthy of negotiating extreme obstacles. Additionally, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers an available electronic-disconnecting front stabilizer bar — Active Sway Bar System (ASBS) — delivering a 28-percent increase in wheel travel.
"A long list of proven 4x4 hardware — essential components among off-road enthusiasts — underscores the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's off-road capabilities," said Donoughe. "From beefy axles and heavy-duty transfer cases with low gear ratios to locking differentials, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has more mettle than any other vehicle, and more than enough to conquer a variety of off-road challenges, right out of the box."
The highly capable underpinnings of Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X and Sahara models include an enhanced Dana 30 front axle and Dana 44 rear axle — each featuring larger pinion shafts, pinion bearings and axle joints for increased durability compared to its predecessor. Engineered to take on the most demanding trails, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model features enhanced heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles, which also feature larger pinion shafts, pinion bearings and axle joints.
Providing armor for the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's underbody components are three skid plates — protecting the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. Two-wheel-drive Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models feature one skid plate to protect the fuel tank.
Four-wheel-drive Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X and Sahara models feature the second-generation Command-Trac® NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case, featuring a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. An optional Trac-Lok® limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip during low-traction situations.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model features an Off-Road Rock-Trac TM NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Active Sway Bar System and 32-inch B.F. Goodrich Off-road tires.
Even More On-road Refinement
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features an even more refined on-road experience courtesy of its 116-inch wheelbase, all-new 100-percent stiffer frame, 50-percent stiffer body and refined five-link coil suspension. In addition, new steering and suspension geometry provides precise ride and handling characteristics, while new sound-deadening techniques reduce cabin noise by more than 20 percent.
Ride balance in the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited achieves minimal body lean when cornering and braking due to the five-link coil suspension's new upper and lower control arms and full-width forged-steel track bars. Also, lower suspension spring rates provide a softer, more comfortable on-road ride.
Standard on the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X model, low-pressure twin-tube shock absorbers are tuned to match softer coil rates, achieving optimum balance between advanced on-road handling and rugged off-road capability. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara and Rubicon models feature standard high-pressure monotube shocks, utilizing Low Speed Tunable (LST) valve technology.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's new recirculating-ball steering configuration features a robust cross-car steering linkage system, providing the stiffest possible steering linkage in a solid-axle vehicle. A decreased scrub radius significantly reduces steering wheel inputs, such as bump steer from uneven road surfaces.
Standard on the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface. ESP features three modes — "full on," "full off" and "partial on."
Even More Powerful and Fuel-efficient Engine
New on all 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models is a 3.8-liter overhead valve V-6 engine, with 205 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque — producing more horsepower and torque than its predecessor with improved fuel economy. A standard six-speed manual transmission or an available four-speed automatic transmission is offered.
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. and an optional towing package that includes a 4.10 axle ratio, class III trailer hitch and two front tow hooks.
For key diesel markets outside North America, a diesel engine will also be available — for the first time in a Jeep Wrangler — with a five-speed manual transmission.
Even More Authentic Jeep Design
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited takes on a radical four-door open-air design with Jeep-signature design cues — classic round headlamps, seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel flares and exposed forged hinges merged with Wrangler Unlimited's longer wheelbase, front-hinged rear doors, exposed B-pillar and larger sport bar — creating a stance that commands attention like no other Wrangler in its 65-year history.
"The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited extends Jeep design cues into a four-door, open-air form that is unmistakably Jeep Wrangler and unmistakably new," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design. "The Wrangler Unlimited's appearance is simple and pure, yet signals a new design approach to this familiar icon. Every angle reflects its boldly expanded posture and adventurous spirit, constructed in a head-turning silhouette that is authentic Jeep."
Several Jeep concept vehicles — the 1997 Jeep Dakar, 2004 Jeep Rescue and 2005 Jeep Gladiator — that explored the combination of added space and utility with Wrangler's rugged off-road character, inspired the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's design.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's 20.6-inch longer wheelbase with full-framed or half rear doors is encompassed by taut lines, sharp angles and planar surfaces, appearing not so much styled as constructed. The result is a design that is simple, strong and purpose-built, giving Wrangler Unlimited a military quality — upright and rugged, and imposing without being intimidating.
The interior design of the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited draws from the exterior, with a straightforward, purposeful, yet contemporary theme that delivers a new level of comfort, spaciousness and convenience. Featuring a Slate Gray or Khaki interior, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited utilizes new grain patterns delivering a technical appearance with geometric themes, complementing its rugged exterior.
The instrument panel features an all-new analog instrument cluster, four round airflow registers, six speakers and a 32-percent-larger locking glove box. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's tweeter speakers are located on top of the instrument panel and face each opposing occupant for optimal left- and right-channel clarity.
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's center stack provides easy-to-reach controls for audio system, HVAC, power window and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) switches. An available 368-watt Alpine stereo with optional navigation system is located at the top of the center stack for better visibility. Radios feature an auxiliary jack for portable MP3 compatibility.
Offering easy-to-use, comprehensive driving directions, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's available navigation system provides real-time guidance on local, city and highway roads throughout the United States and Canada. In addition, a trail feature leaves behind a virtual breadcrumb trail that shows where the vehicle has driven off-road, enabling the driver to retrace the route and return to the trailhead.
Even More Safety and Security Features
Like all Jeep vehicles, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is designed to improve handling and accident avoidance, and provide protection. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited includes the highest level of safety features ever offered in the vehicle's history in order to provide customers the ability to safely "go anywhere, do anything."
Following are available safety and security features in the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited:
Advanced Multi-stage Air Bag System: This system inflates with a force appropriate to the severity of an impact. It includes the occupant classification system (OCS)
Anti-lock-braking System: Electronic sensors help detect impending wheel lockup. The standard ABS system offers improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions
Brake Assist: The vehicle senses a panic brake condition and applies maximum braking power, providing the shortest possible stopping distance
Child Seat Anchor System: Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) make it easier to install compatible aftermarket child seats in the rear seat
Electronic Roll Mitigation: A system that observes and monitors the vehicle speed and steering rate to estimate the potential for a rollover situation. If necessary, the engine torque is reduced and a short burst of full braking is applied to the appropriate wheel to immediately limit lateral force, providing improved roll stability
Electronic Stability Program (ESP): ESP aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability, providing oversteer and understeer control to maintain vehicle behavior on various road surfaces. This standard feature has three settings, allowing the driver more control over the vehicle during spirited driving
Energy-absorbing Steering Column: Manual-adjust collapsing steering column includes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that move relative to each other, which allows the column to move forward and provide more energy absorption during an impact
Occupant Classification System (OCS): Measures conditions for activation or deactivation of the passenger-side front air bag based upon the weight of the occupant
Pretensioners: During an impact, the impact sensors initiate front seat belt pretensioners to immediately remove slack from seat belts, which reduces the forward movement of the occupant's head and torso
Seat-mounted Side Air Bags: Available seat-mounted side air bags extend protection to driver and front passenger
Side-impact Door Beams: Door beams are made of high-strength steel mounted in the vehicle's doors to help prevent passenger compartment intrusion
