The long-awaited Audi R8 gets the green light for production.
Audi's new high-performance car based on the 2003 Le Mans quattro concept will hit the market in the second quarter of 2007 as the Audi R8, the company said in a statement on its Web site on Tuesday.
Production of the R8 is set to begin at Audi's Neckarsulm, Germany, plant in late 2006. Audi said it would invest about 28 million euros or approximately $33 million in its production line for the product. The Le Mans quattro concept made its debut two years ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
"Through the R8, we are looking to build on our successes in motorsports and carry them over to series production," said Audi chief executive MartinWinterkorn.
